New dashboard shows subject uptake trends in HESA data

Interactive tool provides visualisations of the numbers and locations of students in subjects of study over twelve years.

Published today on the HESA website, the HE subject uptake dashboard shows the numbers of students entering, studying, and qualifying from courses by subject.

Designed as an open data tool for planners and researchers, the dashboard includes data from the HESA Student record on students’ level and mode of study as well as demographic details such as sex and ethnicity. The dashboard shows both a twelve-year time series and mapping of subject provision across the UK at different levels of subject aggregation.

Examples of the insights that can be discovered from the new tool include the finding in a press release about the dashboard on the HESA website showing the decline in popularity of French studies and the rapid growth of students studying Artificial intelligence.

A blog by the developers of the dashboard explains how it was compiled and how to gain insights from this new presentation of HESA data.

Vikas Dhawan, our director of data insights and solutions, said:

“The subject uptake dashboard has been developed to address the needs of the UK higher education sector to understand subject provision over time and highlight areas of interest for policymakers and other stakeholders. We are keen to hear feedback from users about the new tool, and for suggestions of future interactive products that would make HESA data more valuable and accessible to users.”
