Double win for Jisc security team

The team took home two prizes at the Computing Security Excellence Awards.

The security operations team is named security team of the year while director of security and David Batho picks up the accolade of CISO of the year

It was a proud night for us at the Computing Security Excellence Awards, winning, not one, but two prestigious industry awards.

The security operations team was named security team of the year while director of security David Batho picked up the accolade of CISO of the year.

Both awards celebrate to our belief in the power of making knowledge available to all so the sector stays resilient in the face of evolving cyberattacks.

The 38-strong security operations team dedicates itself to sharing knowledge, skills, and intelligence across the education and research sectors. It works with a cyber security community of more than 2,500 members of security experts, delivering free training, hosting threat intelligence briefings, and, crucially, for alerting security professionals in colleges and universities as soon as we are aware of a new threat.

As well as leading the team, David plays a key role in introducing innovation, most recently playing an instrumental role in developing our security operations centre (SOC), which is tailored to the unique needs of educational institutions and harnesses AI-powered tools to significantly reduce the time it takes to detect and recover from attacks.

On the wins, David said:

“I’m incredibly proud of the team. I see first-hand day-to-day the efforts each and every one of them goes to help protect our members and customers. It’s also a testament to our cyber security community which is an incredibly valuable network of security experts from universities, colleges and research institutions from across the UK coming together to enable peer-to-peer learning and strengthen the sector as a whole.

“Needless to say, receiving the award for CISO of the year is a great honour and one that was only achievable thanks to the support and talents of my team.”
