Quick guide

Digital delivery for work-based learning

Last updated: 21 January 2021

The issue

Across the UK, work-based learning providers are facing the challenge of developing their digital delivery to support teaching, learning and assessment across curriculum areas in working environments.

Providers need to develop flexible and appropriate methods of course delivery and assessment, and platforms to support access to real-time and asynchronous learning and content. They also need to engage strategically with businesses and other stakeholder organisations, using digital tools to support communication, and information and data sharing.

What you can do

Support using digital platforms and tools

Taking a blended learning approach may be the way forward for post pandemic learning in the work-based learning sector. Find out more about developing blended learning strategies.

Staff might be new to teaching and learning. Our 'active learning in a digital world' blog offers some useful ideas for embedding active learning techniques for delivery using blended and hybrid methods.

More information about teaching and learning can be found in the digital pedagogy toolkit, based on member experiences during the coronavirus pandemic.

You might want to support your staff to deliver engaging live online classes and meetings. We've put together some hints and tips for interactive online sessions.

Choose the right platforms

With the growing number of options, choosing the right platforms can be a challenge. The 'live online learning – is this the future?' blog will help you ask the right questions when you are thinking about investing in live online delivery.

Support new learners online

If you have new starters joining your programmes, 'building bonds with new learners' will give you ideas about how to build relationships between tutors and learners.

Planning and preparation

Strategic planning is essential for success when developing digital delivery in work-based learning. Areas you may want to consider include:

  • Vision
  • Leadership
  • Change management
  • Infrastructure
  • Staff development
  • Quality

You might find the Welsh Government Digital 2030 strategic framework for work based learning, further education and adult and community learning a good starting point.
