About

Digital transformation is no longer a distant ambition for our sector - it is a strategic necessity. As higher education organisations navigate increasing financial pressures, address longstanding technical legacy, and explore the transformative potential of generative AI, the need for coherent, sector wide digital transformation has never been more critical.

A digital maturity assessment is a crucial component of a digital transformation strategy. An assessment provides a data-driven evaluation of existing organisational digital capabilities, establishing a baseline understanding of digital maturity.

In July 2025 Universities UK published a report Transformation and efficiency: towards a new era of collaboration. One of the actions in this report was for Jisc to support universities to baseline their existing digital and data maturity against sector benchmarks.  To support this, Jisc developed a digital maturity assessment to provide a clear, evidence‑based view of how well digital enables organisations to deliver strategic priorities now and in the years ahead. The assessment was open to higher education (HE) providers throughout May and June 2026,

The assessment received 88 responses from 83 higher education providers (some organisations offered more than one response) representing a broad range of mission groups, institutional types and UK nations. This breadth of participation means the findings reflect a wide range of organisational contexts and strategic priorities across the sector.

This session will provide an insight into the assessment findings, highlighting that digital maturity is not a single organisational characteristic. The findings provide a sector-wide perspective on digital maturity that helps organisations interpret their own assessment results to support strategic reflection, informed prioritisation and organisational improvement.
