E-sports has rapidly emerged as one of the UK's fastest-growing digital industries, offering powerful opportunities for student engagement, employability, and skills development. Across further and higher education, e-sports programmes have the potential to re-engage learners who may be disengaged from traditional academic pathways, while also developing transferable skills in teamwork, communication, digital production, event management, health and wellbeing, and enterprise.

However, despite this potential, e-sports has not been successfully rolled out across all colleges and universities. Many institutions face common challenges, such as unclear curriculum alignment, a lack of industry expertise, insufficient facilities, or misconceptions that e-sports is “just gaming” rather than a structured, career-focused education pathway. Without strong partnerships and a clear strategic vision, e-sports initiatives can struggle to achieve meaningful academic or employability outcomes.
