About

Foundations of leading with data, is designed to equip further and higher education leaders and managers with the fundamental skills and knowledge to drive data initiatives within their institutions.

Delivered in collaboration with The Data Lab, it combines Jisc’s expertise in digital leadership, data maturity and AI in education with The Data Lab’s cross sector experience in data science and AI.

Format

This course is delivered online through two separate two-hour sessions. Each session combines presentations, interactive activities, and group discussions.

Each session will start at 10:00 and finish at 12:00, however, participants are requested to join the session at 09:45 to ensure a smooth start.

Who should attend?

This course is designed for higher education and further education leaders and managers who are looking to champion data-informed decision-making and AI within their institutions, for example:

  • Operational and departmental managers integrating data and AI into their strategies
  • Educators and curriculum developers enhancing their understanding of data and AI in education
  • Strategic decision-makers responsible for implementing technology initiatives
  • Consultants and project managers involved in digital transformation projects

No prior knowledge of data and AI is required.

What we will cover

Session one: The current data landscape: Driving value from data (two hours including a short break)

This will focus on helping you develop a credible voice when seeking to lead with data.  You’ll consider the current data landscape and its implications for education, explore why leading with data is challenging and be able to differentiate between offensive and defensive data strategies.

  • Find a credible voice when talking about data
  • Identify the value of data in your organisation
  • Discover your role in your organisation’s data maturity journey

Session two: Leading with data: Strategy and responsible leadership (two hours including a short break)

This will start by helping you develop an inspirational vision that you can communicate and share with your colleagues and stakeholders. It will also focus on developing a believable path to success so that others will want to join you on your transformational journey.

  • Defining a data and AI strategy: Aligning and executing your strategy
  • Responsible data leadership: Guiding principles to ensure ethical practices and responsible leadership
  • Embedding a data culture: Address bias and building inclusive teams to foster a positive data culture

Training outcomes

By the end of this course, you will:

  • Develop a credible voice when discussing data and AI within your organisation
  • Recognise the strategic value of data and its potential to enhance organisational performance
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of aligning data and AI strategies with your organisation’s broader ambitions, and how to successfully implement them
  • Demonstrate leadership in fostering responsible, ethical and transparent practices in data and AI initiatives
