Designed for teaching and learning staff in the UK tertiary education sector who want to develop confidence in critically evaluating AI use, understanding key risks, and applying AI responsibly in educational contexts.
This module is the third in a three-part series on AI Literacy for teaching and learning. Module one: understanding AI and module two: essential AI skills are available now.
Develop a more critical and responsible approach to AI with this module for educators in tertiary education. Module three: ethical and responsible use of AI explores some of the key risks and considerations surrounding AI in education, including bias, misinformation, data privacy, security, copyright, and academic integrity.
Building on the foundations introduced in module one and the practical applications explored in module two, this module shifts the focus from what AI can do to how it behaves in practice, where its limitations may affect outcomes, and what this means for teaching, learning and assessment. Throughout the module, AI is positioned as a tool that requires careful and informed use. The emphasis is on developing a critical approach — recognising where outputs may be incomplete, inaccurate or biased, and understanding the importance of professional judgement, institutional guidance and ethical responsibility.
By the end of module three, you will be better equipped to evaluate AI-generated content critically, make more informed decisions about responsible AI use, and consider how academic integrity can be maintained.
Benefits
By completing this digital learning module, individuals will be able to:
- Critically evaluate AI-generated content for bias, inaccuracies and misleading information
- Use AI responsibly in education by considering privacy, security, data protection and copyright
- Understand how AI is shaping assessment and academic integrity, including policy considerations, detection limitations, and approaches to designing assessment and supporting students/learners
Who should access the module
This module is aimed at teaching and learning staff who have completed modules one and two, or have some experience of using AI, and want to develop a more critical and responsible approach, particularly in relation to risk, fairness, assessment and academic integrity.
What we cover
This module is structured into themed learning sections, which cover:
- Critically evaluating AI: critically evaluating AI, exploring how AI-generated content can reflect bias and misinformation, how these arise, and how to approach outputs with critical judgement in teaching and learning contexts
- Responsible and ethical use of AI: exploring how to use AI in ways that protect data, maintain trust, and align with institutional guidance, including considerations around privacy, security and intellectual property
- AI, assessment and academic integrity: exploring how AI is shaping assessment in tertiary education, including the limitations of AI detection and student perspectives
The module is designed to fit around your schedule — there’s no need to complete it in one sitting or in a set order. You can explore the content at your own pace, revisiting sections whenever you want to reflect on where AI could be useful in teaching and learning.
Each of the three main learning sections includes interactive elements and knowledge‑checking activities to support your learning. The module ends with a quiz, and successful completion of the module is dependent on passing this quiz.

What is a digital learning module?
A digital learning module is an online, self‑paced training unit designed to provide clear, accessible learning on a specific topic through interactive content, scenarios, and knowledge‑checking activities. Our digital learning modules are built to support all levels of staff and learners, offering informative and engaging materials on priority areas such as information security, data protection, digital accessibility, copyright and emerging fields like AI.
They can be delivered off‑the‑shelf or fully tailored to an organisation’s policies and context, ensuring relevance and consistency across staff training. Organisations can deploy these modules to give all learners access to up‑to‑date, structured training that can be completed flexibly and tracked as part of internal development pathways.
