The Jisc Session Border Controller as a Service (SBCaaS) will enable members and customers to migrate from expensive legacy voice platforms onto a fully managed alternative.
About the service
SBCaaS provides an integrated on-net and off-net Microsoft Teams voice service. This service provides person-to-person, inbound and outbound PSTN calling for all users, fully managed within Jisc’s platform hosted on the Janet Network. This should offer a solution at significantly lower costs than legacy voice platforms, offering a great saving to the sector.
And it will not be limited to Microsoft Teams. In the future we will look at integration of other platforms common in education and research such as Zoom. The vision for SBCaaS is that all Jisc members will be able to benefit from a fully integrated telephony experience within their chosen collaboration tool, wherever they are.
Why is this needed?
Some Jisc members are struggling with legacy and outdated PABXs connected to ISDN carrier services to provide voice calling for their users. Not only are these services expensive to maintain, outdated and difficult to integrate with the latest desktop and mobile collaboration tools, but BT has announced that the ISDN will be switched off in 2025 and Microsoft has announced that Skype-for-Business will be retired in 2021.
Jisc members and customers urgently need a migration path to a modern alternative for providing voice services to the desktop and mobile user, and we have responded with our SBCaaS service.
What we’re doing
The project has successfully built a proof of concept, using a cloud-based infrastructure, and is at the point of moving to a scalable beta platform hosted on Janet. Service design, build and operating process are being worked through with an ambition to have a service offering in 2022.
Accelerate your journey to cloud communications with Session Border Controller as a service.
