Research
We provide the UK’s National Research and Education Network (NREN), delivering the digital infrastructure that enables world-class research.
Through Janet, we support data-intensive research and collaboration between universities, national facilities and international partners.
Working with sector partners such as UKRI, we help universities manage policy compliance, research data and repositories, supporting both strategic goals and day-to-day research activity.
Our services ensure research is trusted, secure and sustainable, enabling teams to deliver impact and work effectively.
Licensing and procurement
We work closely with your library and procurement leaders to secure fair, sustainable deals for digital tools, applications and content that support teaching, learning, research and university operations.
Through our licence subscriptions manager and sector-wide negotiation groups, we manage more than 450 agreements with major providers, including Adobe, Oracle Java, Microsoft, CrowdStrike and academic publishers such as Elsevier. These collective negotiations have delivered more than £500 million in savings for UK education and research institutions to date.
We also negotiate national agreements with academic publishers and software vendors, licensing digital content via the licence subscriptions manager and software through Chest, supporting universities across the UK.
Alongside this, we develop compliant framework agreements and dynamic purchasing systems across cloud, connectivity, library and open research services. Available exclusively to members, these agreements help procurement teams secure legally compliant, high-value contracts while saving the sector millions of pounds each year.
Our negotiation and licensing strategic groups set the direction of negotiations and ensure members’ requirements are heard. Working with these groups enables us to negotiate affordable, sector-focused agreements that save time and money.
