Janet txt's basic service is free to set up, with no annual or monthly charges, and allows you to communicate with staff, students and parents easily offering time and cost savings for both your users and institution.
The service allows you to prepare messages from templates using mail merge functions, pre-schedule delivery and to group recipients into relevant groups for bulk delivery, for example, send to all staff, second year law students etc.
A Moodle interface module called MoodleMobile has been developed to allow Moodle VLE users access to the Janet txt service.
We have re-procured this service to take advantage of the changing SMS market and have set up a new SMS framework agreement for the Jisc community.
Following rigorous OJEU rules, we have managed to reduce unit prices and introduce volume discounts, bringing you a high quality, competitively-priced service. Details of this SMS framework can be found in the Janet txt framework buyer’s guide (pdf).
It also supports customisation and branding options so that the tools and the messages are clearly associated with your organisation.
The service allows participating organisations to administer and regulate their own usage of texting facilities, with specific billing and auditing reports.
Safe and secure
The service has been designed as a secure and highly available facility. It complies with best practice related to the handling of data for minors or vulnerable adults with relevant operating staff having undergone Criminal Records Bureau checks.
Using the PageOne SOAP API, you have access to a suite of message distribution and management services within a secure environment. SOAP is platform neutral and is supported by most programming environments including Java, Delphi, PHP and .NET.
ISO 270001 certified - your data will be securely handled and managed by PageOne.
Ensuring business continuity
Janet txt can be integrated into your business continuity plans as the preferred way to communicate with staff, students and parents.
Block SMS messages purchased are valid for 12 months from order date and will expire after that date. However, if further blocks of texts are purchased within one month of expiry date they will be revalidated for a further 12 months.
This is something members need to keep track of, particularly when staff changeovers occur. See the buyers’ guide for more information.
Each organisation pays for the texts etc that it purchases. Jisc makes no additional charge for use of the framework.
