About the proof of concept

Jisc has partnered with Fortune 500 global technology vendor Honeywell and their Forge for Buildings platform to conduct a proof-of-concept working with higher and further education members for the benefit of wider sector needs.

Forge for Buildings is an advanced analytics platform in the cloud that provides real-time insights into building performance. Through the Forge Gateway, data is pulled from the building management system and connected Internet of things (IoT) devices to provide easy to understand data visualisations to inform business critical decisions.

Building management systems control assets such as heating, lighting, air-handling units, energy meters, safety and security systems and productivity systems. IoT sensors report on more people-centred data including humidity, air quality, space usage and environmental sentiment. All data is then aggregated in the Forge cloud environment to provide actionable visibility to improve building performance.

Addressing sector building performance challenges

Working alongside FE and HE members on our proof-of concept journey, we now have member-led direction to create a common core platform through a tailored dashboard approach within Forge in order to address education specific challenges.

As a result, the insights derived from these tailored dashboards will support members to;

  • Reduce carbon footprint and achieve sustainability goals
  • Improve building comfort and safety for students and staff increasing satisfaction levels
  • Deliver energy and resource efficiencies across the estate
  • Optimise space utilisation
  • Action real-time maintenance alerts

The Forge platform also provides proactive, real-time maintenance alerts and management, moving away from planned preventative maintenance schedules to support further resource and cost efficiencies.

The direct outcome of our smart buildings management and IoT innovation with Honeywell will help members to move a step closer towards their wider intelligent campus journey.
