Supporting transnational education
We foster transnational education for the UK higher education sector through our consultancy, research, advice and guidance, and services.
As the UK digital, data, and technology agency for tertiary education, Jisc is an enabler for the transnational education (TNE) ambitions of UK higher education. We foster successful transnational education by providing trusted expertise on:
- International students' digital experience: research on the lived digital experiences of TNE students and staff together with recommendations for policymakers, providers and students
- Delivering digital equity in transnational education, guidance for university leaders: a practical checklist of digital considerations to help institutions minimise risk, foster culturally sensitive dialogue and support equitable provision
- Transnational education licensing: efficient and cost-effective licensing of digital content for students based outside the UK
- Cyber security: safeguarding UK digital infrastructure against evolving cyber threats, protecting research data, and providing secure access to educational resources for students and staff abroad
- Janet Network: as the UK’s National Research and Education Network (NREN), we work with the global NREN community to provide robust high-speed connectivity to TNE collaborations and international campuses
- Trust and identity: standards that enable UK higher education to provide secure, authenticated access to digital resources for students and staff abroad, including the global eduroam network
Jisc is also the home of HESA, the Higher Education Statistics Agency, which collects and analyses data on students who study for UK university awards overseas. HESA's Aggregate Offshore Record helps the sector understand the scope and impact of TNE, providing insights into student demographics, study levels, and regional trends. This information is crucial for policy-making, improving educational practices, and ensuring quality in TNE programmes.
We work closely with sector bodies to ensure our collective support ultimately strengthens the institution's global presence and competitiveness in TNE. This collaborative approach ensures Jisc's support for members – through consultancy, advice and guidance, and service provision – helps the UK higher education sector navigate the international complexities of data, digital, and technology, allowing them to focus on delivering high-quality education to their TNE students.
