The origin of our name goes back to 1983 when we were set up as a Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) to deal with networking and specialist information services, providing national vision and leadership for the benefit of the entire higher education sector.
We’re still doing that but, since 2012, as an independent not-for profit called Jisc.

We own and operate Janet, the UK’s super-fast national research and education network (NREN). Used by 18 million people, Janet includes built-in cyber security protection tailored to the specific needs of the UK’s education and research sectors.
We provide technology solutions for our members (colleges, universities and research centres) and customers (public sector bodies, charities, independent education and academy trusts), including OpenAthens for digital access management, the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) for higher education data and analytics, Prospects for careers and employability services, and Luminate for sector insight and benchmarking.
We also help our members save time and money by negotiating sector-wide agreements and provide trusted advice and practical assistance on digital technology. This, coupled with our work as the sectors’ shared service provider, saves our customers over £500 million per year.
