Artificial intelligence

Supporting the responsible and effective adoption of artificial intelligence (AI).

Supporting human-led education

Artificial intelligence is at the forefront of a changing landscape in tertiary education. From personalised learning pathways to automated administrative tasks, AI promises to redefine teaching and learning for learners and practitioners alike. But harnessing the full potential of AI isn’t without its challenges – both ethical and technological – which need careful navigation.

Thanks to the support of a growing community of innovative and forward-thinking experts from across the UK’s education sector, we have developed resources and conducted pilots to support you and your path to effective and responsible use of AI in education.

AI tool pilots

Our pilots so far have included a range of exciting AI products including an AI assisted marking tool, a chatbot for student queries, and a virtual reality interview simulator.

AI in assessment

From September 2025 to August 2026, we ran a year-long AI in assessment pilot, bringing together two strands: trialling three tools specifically designed to support marking and feedback (Graide, KEATH and TeacherMatic) and exploring general-purpose AI tools (for example ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot) supported by a best practice toolkit.

Both strands examined how AI can support formative and summative assessment in further and higher education, with a particular focus on reducing marking and feedback workload while maintaining quality.

Read more about this project on our artificial intelligence blog.

The end of pilot report is due to be published in Autumn 2026.

Training

"AI is already transforming teaching and learning. It’s helping staff manage workloads effectively and enhancing student outcomes through improved engagement and personalised learning. Our aim is to guide UK education and research towards using the technology in the best possible way to meet the needs of students and staff by implementing AI safely, securely and ethically.”
