Is your organisation at the bleeding edge of wireless technology, or are you lagging behind your peers? With mobility and wireless connectivity increasingly considered business critical, understanding where your organisation sits on this spectrum is a key contributor to your future roadmap.
This report presents the findings of the 2019 wireless census, a survey which gathered data on our members’ experiences of, and requirements for, wireless technology. The responses received, from 72 individual organisations, provide a ‘snapshot’ of wireless usage in UK education.
Our report indicates trends in wireless resourcing and infrastructure, revealing some pressing needs and suggesting emerging areas of focus. These findings can help your organisation benchmark against the sector as a whole.
Jisc hopes to repeat this research on an annual basis, in order to build a year-on-year picture of wireless resourcing.
Summary of key findings:
- Wireless connectivity is a clear priority for education and public sector organisations: wireless footprints within organisations are set to grow over the next five years, with WLAN staff resource developing to meet this need
- On-campus connectivity continues to be considered extremely important to organisational requirements, with most also supporting visiting associates and members of the public
- Off-campus connectivity enables a variety of applications and collaborative projects, free-text comments reveal, and so helps meet the needs of different sectors and institution types
- These findings also show market interest in adopting new wireless technologies, including some of Jisc's access and roaming products
These findings were also presented at a member event in February 2019. Programme materials are available on the event page, including slide decks from each presentation and a summary of the break-out session discussions.
