We're testing a prediction market tool to help universities predict which research papers will do well in the REF.
What we're doing
Prediction markets are exchange-traded markets created for the purpose of trading the outcome of events. We're working with the University of Bristol to test a tool based on these markets to help support better decision-making about what to submit to the Research Excellence Framework (REF).
The tool also has potential to be used in recruitment, learning analytics work, preparation for the teaching excellence framework (TEF) or evaluating Jisc’s own innovation ideas.
Following a successful first year, where the tool was piloted in three markets at the University of Bristol - in the psychology, biology and chemistry departments - the project will continue for a further 12 months. In this second year the tool will be piloted in other universities as we develop a more specialised and user-friendly interface, based on user feedback, and explore the potential of developing into a service.
How this will benefit you
As well as giving funders a better view of UK research, the tool has the potential to benefit universities, providing them with stronger evidence to inform decisions and cases to government for research funding.
