Encouraging and supporting the deployment of IPv6 across institutional networks
Started 1 Jun 1998
We will provide you with the necessary tools and information to make full use of this important addressing protocol which is supported by major ISPs, home networking equipment manufacturers and web companies around the world.
With the reserves of IPv4 addresses now depleted, it is even more imperative to move to IPv6. This will ensure that you can support more IP addresses across your organisation and accommodate the growth in devices requiring access to the Internet.
IPv6 is now used as standard in all common host and router platforms. It makes good business sense to begin IPv6 deployment now, enabling users to access services such as mobile IP as well as your own services. IPv6 also offers additional features which can simplify processes and avoid complex administration.
What we're doing
Janet's network backbone is fully enabled for IPv6. As part of this project, we will work with members of the community to develop and maintain a community IPv6 web presence, and an IPv6 tunnel broker service to help organisations to procure infrastructure for their IPv6 deployment.
We have developed the following resources to support your deployment of IPv6:
- A technical summary for network managers. It gives a broad understanding of the issues involved in enabling IPv6
- A community group to discuss any relevant issues
- A mailing list to share ideas and challenges with your peers
