From 2 October 2017, Liberate will move out of beta. You'll benefit from a robustly-tested service, as well as full support on deployment and management.
About Liberate (beta)
Robust access management is a must-have for all universities, colleges, skills providers and research organisations. Liberate, currently in beta, provides a gateway between your organisation's active directory and our access management services.
You can trust it because we already have a proven track record in delivering world-leading access management services to the UK’s education and research sectors. Designed, developed, and operated by us it is fully interoperable with our UK Access Management Federation, eduroam and Assent services. It also offers an authenticated web proxy to support services that still use IP address authentication.
Benefits of Liberate
With our highly-specialist knowledge of the education and research sectors’ needs we have built the most technologically-advanced, comprehensive, accessible and cost-effective access management solution on the market.
A comprehensive solution
Liberate is the only solution that supports all three of our access management services and IP address authentication. Other solutions typically support only one of these. Liberate provides a single solution to access management, enabling you to reduce the time and effort spent on managing and administrating multiple services.
Value for money
Participation in the Liberate service beta is free. Once the beta ends we will be offering Liberate at a competitively-priced and flexible tariff. You only pay for the components you need. It’s an annual tariff that is fully-inclusive with no additional or hidden charges so you can plan your budget with confidence.
We're world leaders in access management services for education and research. Connected to the trusted Janet Network, it also benefits from our advanced security capabilities that help you protect your assets and maintain business continuity.
Saves time and effort
As a fully-managed service that is supported by our world-leading team of technical experts, Liberate frees up library and IT staff to spend their time more productively.
Authenticate user credentials against your Microsoft Active Directory or other lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP) directory
Authorise users via membership of groups that are defined either in your Microsoft Active Directory or another LDAP directory
Provide user attributes to services based on policies determined by group membership
Support accounting and reporting of user authentications and service use
Liberate is delivered by us from a public cloud provider using our own service platform that connects directly to the Janet Network. When you subscribe to the Liberate service you’ll be able to choose which components (UK Access Management Federation, eduroam, Assent and the authenticated web proxy) you want to enable.
Then, guided and assisted by our team of expert technical specialists, you’ll deploy a virtual private network (VPN) endpoint. We use the OpenVPN technology; you can either use your own endpoint alongside configuration that we supply or a virtual machine appliance that we can also provide. Liberate uses the VPN to protect data when it is in transit between your network and our service platform. We’ll then connect Liberate to your active directory or another LDAP directory and enable access to the Liberate service portal.
Once this is done you’ll be able to make changes to authorisation and attribute release policies and view your usage reports. Our experts are available to help you make the most of the service by providing you with all the assistance that you need. Liberate is delivered as a fully-managed service but you are also free to manage as little or as much as you like using the service portal.
As a beta this service is still in development.
Features may change, and it may not function perfectly.
The feedback you provide will be critical to help improve and shape the production service.
