COVID-19 recovery planning: international student impact user guide

This guide is designed to be used alongside the COVID-19 recovery planning: international student impact suite of dashboards in Heidi Plus.

Interact with this dashboard suite to:

  • Assess the potential impact of a reduction in international recruitment of PG and UG (postgraduate and undergraduate) students to inform subject planning at your provider
  • Develop provider-specific risk management strategies by modelling the demand for international, PG and UG study by provision and domicile

These dashboards are available to all Gold, Silver and Bronze Heidi Plus users and can be viewed and interacted with from within Heidi Plus. These dashboards can also be downloaded as an image or pdf only. Data contained within these dashboards has been rounded following the HESA rounding methodology. Details about the HESA rounding methodology can be found in the Heidi Plus Support Centre, ‘5 – Data’ workbook.

This guide will help you:

  • Understand key insights that can be gained
  • Provide tips on using each dashboard within the suite
  • Provide you with any other information to inform your use

Summary of the derived fields used in this dashboard suite

International student count

This is the count of number of international students enrolled across various JACS subjects and principal subjects for the sector or at a provider for a specific academic year. This helps in understanding the student ratio across international vs total student population and international vs UK student population. It provides a trend of how the international student population has changed over time.

The measure value changes based on the interactive risk assessment filters provided on the dashboard. It will provide reduced international student numbers based on the domicile country and student loss percentage value inputs provided by the user. This helps in understanding and evaluating the impact of loss of international students on overall sector and individual subject streams.

Risk FPE (full person equivalent)

This is count of number of students at risk based on the inputs provided in the risk assessment filters. This helps user assess the exact number of reductions in international student numbers and help them with subject planning for the upcoming year.

The dashboard suite is designed to help planners recognise the demand for course provision at a sector, provider and course level and can be used to assess the risk in the potential loss of student numbers, and to identify mitigation strategies for the recruitment of PG (postgraduate) and UG (undergraduate) students for 2020/21 at your provider.

Summary

This dashboard assesses the demand of principle subjects, providers and domicile country based on student full person equivalent (FPE) and a market share percentage (%) field.

What data has been used?

This dashboard uses HESA student full person equivalent (FPE) data and a derived market share percentage (%), and can be manipulated using the various filter options at the top of the view:

  • Provider
  • Domicile (Country)
  • Level of study: Postgraduate/undergraduate
  • Mode of study: Full/Part-time
  • Academic year
  • JACS Subject area

What are the most popular providers?

The bar chart shows the number of students and market share percentage (%) within the international market for one of all providers based on the filter selection.

Default sort options have been disabled, instead multiple sort options have been provided with the use of the ‘Sort By’ filter on the dashboard and is applicable to all three charts on the dashboard.
