When you need access to cloud infrastructure as a service (IaaS) – such as compute, storage and networking – you want a simple, compliant solution that gets you up and running quickly and cost-effectively.
Procuring from a cloud provider on your own, of course, would be complex and time-consuming. We help to solve the problem by offering access to the IaaS framework established by GÉANT, the organisation which manages the pan-European network for research and education.
By purchasing services via the GÉANT IaaS framework, you get easy, safe, cost-effective and predictable access to a portfolio of IaaS cloud providers across Europe – so you can find the EU-compliant solution you need.
Solutions available through the framework
The services available through this framework cover the following areas:
Backup and storage
Scalable storage in the cloud allows you to securely collect and store data at a massive scale and access them from anywhere, anytime
Block storage is for use with cloud computing
Cloud backup and site recovery services help you protect important applications and provides simple, cost effective disaster recovery
Virtual machines let you deploy a Windows Server or Linux image in the cloud
HPC: use unlimited high-performance computing resources to analyse large-scale research data
A fully-managed NoSQL document database service offers querying and transaction processing over schema-free data, predictable and reliable performance and rapid development
SQL database service lets you rapidly create, extend and scale relational applications into the cloud
Cloud virtual network enables you to create private networks in the cloud with full control over IP addresses, DNS servers, security rules and traffic flows.
For example, using the networking features native the cloud platform makes it easy to deploy a basic load-balanced and firewalled web server farm.
All the suppliers on the framework provide cloud consulting services, including:
Strategy and architecture consulting
Cloud readiness assessments
Other professional services are also available to help you plan and execute the migration of your applications and data to a cloud.
Each supplier provides their own cloud management portal, which will give you a centralised view of your cloud accounts, helping you understand how cloud services are used across your organisation. They also provide a dashboard showing full details of metering, billing, analytics and reporting.
How to access the services
You can purchase IaaS services from Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure through their respective resellers (see table below), as well as from original cloud providers: CloudSigma, Dimension Data and Interoute.
By accessing solutions via the GÉANT IaaS framework, you can:
Save time and money
The GÉANT IaaS framework helps you make resources go further:
Quickly find compliant suppliers, saving resources compared to the time and money you’d spend procuring a service in-house
Cost-effective pricing - because it aggregates demand from across Europe, purchasing power is increased
Network traffic costs are limited, with egress charges either discounted or free
Get peace of mind
GÉANT conducts due diligence on contracts, giving you peace of mind about points of compliance – and better legal conditions, where possible, than you are likely to get by approaching suppliers yourself. A standard, negotiated call-off agreement applies to all suppliers on the framework
You can also be assured that data handling and storage will meet European and national regulations.
Make the most of our world-class Janet Network
Suppliers and services on the framework are connected to the Janet Network, either directly or via GÉANT, so you make the most of the high-capacity, low-latency Janet Network.
Benefit from the simplicity of single sign-on
If you're a member of the UK Access Management Federation, your users can use their home organisation login to access portals of cloud providers on the framework – using eduGAIN, which interconnects identity federations around the world.
Like the UK Access Management Federation, eduGAIN uses the de facto standard protocol, SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language).
