"Every day and in every lesson they’re using the e-books. They don’t have to spend money buying books. They don’t have to spend time going to the library to get that information. It’s all there, all online, which makes them more effective learners."

Maxine Halford, manager of business and management programmes, Havering College

Institution profile:

Havering College is a small to medium-sized college across three sites in the Havering area of east London.

The majority of its 3-4,000 students are 16-18 year olds in FE.

The college also has around 430 HE students and about the same number of apprentices.

Havering College needed to find an alternative to print textbooks because it is too expensive to buy whole class sets for large cohorts and learners are increasingly reluctant to carry heavy books around.

Maxine said,

“They don’t like carrying a bag, they don’t like carrying a book. All they like is their mobile phone in their hand. In addition, the move to more blended learning requires different kinds of resources to support learners’ studies."

Solution

Our e-books for FE were a natural fit for Havering College. Both tutors and learners valued the convenience, 24/7 access and time-saving aspects of using online resources and they are seeing a positive impact on exam results.

Maxine said,

“They can complete their work more easily and quickly and it saves us time having to find extra resources and extra information to give them because it’s all there in the e-books.”
