About
Join us online for our fourth joint building digital capability and digital experience insights community of practice event.
This is an exciting opportunity for staff and leaders in higher or further education who are responsible for developing the digital environment and the digital capability of students and staff in their organisations to come together to share:
- Practice, ideas and issues around enhancing student, staff and organisational digital capability, particularly in the current context and an increase in blended/hybrid approaches to delivery
- Approaches to gathering students and staff expectations and experiences of technology in the current changing context
It's also an opportunity to hear more about our building digital capability and digital experience insights services and understand how these might help you to meet your goals.
Programme
Welcome and introductions
Taking students at the University of Nottingham on a digital learning journey
In this session, colleagues from the University of Nottingham will continue the story of how they are addressing the gaps in the provision of support for students in developing their digital capabilities. Back in November 2019, this community of practice heard about the evidence-based approach taken to identify such gaps and the subsequent recommendations made to the University. Two years later, University of Nottingham share the next steps taken to develop a strategy, launch three work packages targeting various stages in the student journey, and the first implementation of The Digital Student; all set amidst the turbulence of the pandemic.

Rethinking the curriculum

Reflections on the digital education journey at University of Sunderland so far
This session will share the journey that colleagues have been through at the University of Sunderland since the COVID enforced lockdown. Colleagues will discuss the initial fire-fighting response and our move to a position of stability and then identifying and evaluating good new practice from pedagogical and educational technology perspectives. The focus at Sunderland has been to ensure the student at the centre of operational and strategic evolution/revolution.
Integrating digital capability – a whole-college approach
Weston College will be sharing how building digital capability is everyone’s business, from curriculum integration through to staff on-boarding and professional development. Using the Jisc building digital capability service, Weston College has integrated a wide range of resources and strategies as part of the organisation’s mission in creating brighter futures.
How are teaching staff experiencing the digital environment?
This session will explore the findings from the 2020/21 digital experience insights survey from UK further and higher education and will discuss how teaching staff feel this could be improved.
Member stories from the community
Embedding digital discovery in an HE foundation year
Bishop Grosseteste University was keen to embed an understanding of digital capabilities into its foundation year curriculum. This presentation looks at how the Jisc discovery tool was used to encourage foundation year students to reflect on their digital experiences, consider their digital capabilities, and address their own digital development needs. The embedding of these digital-centric conversations is designed to ensure students’ progress onto their degree with an active awareness of their digital capabilities.
