Institutions increasingly promote blended approaches to learning and, in parallel, are gathering data across all areas of the student experience. This workshop looks at the emerging relationship between data and learning design.
We aim to help participants ensure that their blended learning designs are purposeful. We seek to make explicit the pedagogic intent in a learning design and explore how data can enable us to understand whether or not learner behaviour is corresponding to those expectations.
We will show how the insertion of digital activities with a clear pedagogic purpose into a learning design offers the means to support real-time interventions that can make a difference to learner outcomes.
What we'll cover
The workshop will be facilitated by Gill Ferrell, Clive Young, Patrick Lynch from the University of Hull and Samantha Ahern and Natasa Perovic from UCL.
Topics to be covered include:
- An introduction to learning design applying the ABC method
- How to ensure a sound pedagogic purpose to your particular blend of learning activities
- How to tell if your pedagogic approach is working
- How and when to take action based on what your data is telling you and
- What the data can't tell you
This workshop will enable delegates to:
- Explore the connections between learning analytics and learning design
- Apply a simple storyboarding method (ABC) to designing blended learning
- Use data to ensure that the digital elements of course design are achieving the pedagogic intent
This is a pilot event and we are looking for a mix of participants who can give us feedback to help develop the approach. This might involve participating in a short survey or telephone conversation after the event.
Who should attend
The event is aimed at learning and teaching practitioners and those managing and supporting the design and delivery of learning and teaching in higher education and in FE and skills.
No prior knowledge of learning analytics or formal learning design techniques is required.
