About

Our community of practice event is for staff and leaders in higher or further education who are responsible for developing digital capability in their organisations. Our aim is to help move digital capability practice forward across the sector.

This network event offers a unique opportunity for colleagues to work together on all aspects of digital capability and to share practice, ideas and issues around enhancing student, staff and organisational digital capability. It's also an opportunity to hear more about our building digital capability service and understand how it might help meet your goals.

We hold these events twice a year.

Jisc tools for those new to the building digital capability service and community

If you are interested in building digital capability, this is a chance to hear more about our frameworks, discovery tool, organisational models and guidance.

Playful strategies for engaging staff and students with digital capabilities

A chance to explore three game-based approaches to engaging staff and students with digital capabilities.

    Developing digital learning plans

The University of Hull is developing an approach to promoting student digital capability using short, manageable digital learning plans based on the diagnostic reports from the Jisc discovery tool. Students can use their reports to plan the development of digital capabilities for each year of study, using templates that can be shared with Academic Support Tutors (ASTs). ASTs can then provide support to students and initiate discussions around their digital capabilities.

This session will explore the approach being taken at Hull, and invite discussion around other approaches to developing student digital capability

Critical success factors for organisational digital capability

This workshop will introduce the outcomes of recent research into how organisations can develop the cultures, policies and infrastructure to enable and support digital capabilities and practices.  This session will provide an opportunity to explore a practical model which highlights indicators of ‘good practice’ in relation to three stages of maturity that contribute to this goal. Participants will use the model to reflect on their organisational journey to digital capability, and identify next steps to achieving their goals.

Keynote: Student digital capabilities - mind the gap!

In September, Elizabeth tabled a paper at the University of Nottingham’s teaching and learning committee that set out recommendations on how the institution should address the gaps identified in the provision of support for students in developing their digital capabilities.

In this session, Elizabeth will cover the evidence-driven approach that led to this set of recommendations, including: data obtained on current students’ levels of digital capability; data from alumni on which digital capabilities are most important in the workplace; and, the consultative meetings held with each of the 27 schools.

Delegates will also have the opportunity to hear what has been recommended and what steps are being taken to turn the recommendations into new provision.
