Research & Innovation
JISC programmes are contributing to the UK government's research and innovation agenda by helping researchers develop and apply next generation digital technology. Previously intractable research challenges are now opening up to scientific scrutiny thanks to the use of advanced software tools and hardware infrastructure as part of the research process. This is leading to innovation in a range of fields from drug discovery to aircraft engine maintenance to the study of ancient manuscripts.
Key research & innovation activities
Managing Research Data (JISCMRD)
The scientific process is enhanced by managing and sharing research data. Good research data management practice allows reliable verification of results and permits new and innovative research built...
Research infrastructure programme
Computation has become a key component to many research areas. Provision of mid-level systems, the integration of appropriate applications and collaborative technologies sitting upon leading-edge...
Virtual research environment programme
The programme seeks to involve all sectors of the research community and recognises the need to support research activities within and across disciplinary boundaries.
Following the initial five year investment in the UK e-Science infrastructure, the vision for the e-Infrastructure programme is to enhance and consolidate the current technologies and establish...
Repositories and Preservation Programme
The programme is a £14m investment in Higher Education repository and digital content infrastructure. It will fund initiatives to develop the Information Environment supporting digital repositories...
Cancer Imaging VRE
This project will develop a framework to allow researchers and clinicians involved in cancer imaging to share information, images and algorithms. It will achieve this by building on the Research...
Engage Academic Groups with e-Infrastructure
The overall aim of the project is to improve the experience of research users of UK e-Infrastructure, and promote the use of UK e-Infrastructure to a wider set of users by engaging with different...
e-Infrastructure Use Cases and Service Usage Models
This project aims to gather and document concrete evidence of how e-infrastructure is, or is planned to be used as a facilitator of the research process across all major disciplines. This is not...
National Centre for Text Mining (Phase 2)
With an overwhelming amount of knowledge recorded in texts, it is imperative to use automated techniques that can identify, extract, manage, integrate and exploit this knowledge for research and...
National Grid Service Phase 3
The mission of the National Grid Service is to provide coherent electronic access for UK researchers to all computational and data based resources and facilities required to carry out their research,...
