Advice and support for Publishers and Service Providers on federated access management.

Federation Support for Publishers and Service Providers

Support and advice for publishers and Service Providers

Support and possible solutions for publishers and Service Providers are available through information available on Service Provider section

Support for smaller publishers

For some smaller publishers joining the UK federation may be problematic due to the publisher not having the financial and/or technical support in-house to implement federated access management technologies.

Hosting services

Smaller publishers who want their resource available to UK federation members were suggested to consider making their content available through a hosting service that has either joined and is providing a live service through the UK federation.

Publisher Federated Access Management Project

The JISC invited tenders for the design, development and delivery of a programme of technical support and associated technical solutions aimed at smaller publishers seeking to join the UK Access Management Federation. The contract has been awarded to Kiddeminster College and the University of Cardiff.

JISC also invited applications from smaller publishers to obtain assistance from the JISC Publisher Access Management Support Project to enable them to join the UK Access Management Federation by becoming a Service Provider (SP).

More information

Contacting the publisher directly

To ensure that as many services become available through the UK Access Management Federation, JISC encouraged institutions to contact publishers directly and refer them to the JISC website and the JISC Access Management Team for further information.

We recommended that institutions draft their own letters or emails but may want to include some of the following:

  • Ask them to confirm which access methods they will be providing from 1st August.
  • As a customer you would like them to join the UK Access Management Federation and implement a federated access management solution based on open-standards.
  • If they currently provide access through Athens, ask them to move to a federated access management solution by the end of July 2008. If they are using OpenAthensSP ask them which module they are going to be using (if it is a product which has to use the Federation-Athens gateway please ask them to move to Shibboleth or another SAML-based technology.
  • Please ask them to contact the JISC Access Management Team (jisc-access-management@jiscmail.ac.uk) for further information about joining or implementing a federated access management technology.
