Information Environment Service Registry (IESR)

The Information Environment Service Registry (IESR) has been developed to provide a registry of information about electronic resources that are of value to teachers, researchers and learners. The IESR project is part of JISC's Shared Infrastructure Services programme.

The aim is to create a reliable source of information that other applications, such as portals, can freely access through machine-to-machine protocols to help their end users discover resources of assistance to them.

The IESR contains information about the resources themselves, technical details about how to access the resources, and contact details for the resource providers. For resource providers the IESR will hold a master description of their electronic resources, to which other potential users of the resources may be directed.

What we can do for you

A large amount of IESR’s work takes place at machine-to-machine level i.e. the user is not always aware it is working. It enables a user to be automatically directed to relevant and appropriate resources when searching in the JISC information environment

Its focus is on the producers of electronic resources. It aims to encourage them to register their resources in the registry so they can be easily discovered by users.  The data in the IESR provides a 'master copy' of information about resources. This information includes a description of the resource itself, which can be adapted for local use if necessary. The technical details will give you all the information needed to set up direct access to a service, for example through Z39.50 or OAI-PMH. If your resource is included, more people will become aware of it, leading to increased usage.
