Mimas provides the UK further, higher education and research community with networked access to key data and information resources to support teaching, learning and research across a wide range of disciplines.

What we can do for you

Mimas is a national data centre providing online access to bibliographic reference material, electronic journals, socio-economic, spatial and scientific data, quality internet resources, and learning materials.

Members of the UK further education, higher education and research community are entitled to access these services free of charge as end-users, although institutional subscription and end-user registration are required for some services.

Mimas bibliographic reference services

  • Archives Hub FREE access to descriptions of archive collections held in universities and colleges throughout the United Kingdom. More information
  • Copac FREE access to the merged catalogues of 24 major university research libraries plus the British Library, the National Library of Scotland, and the National Library of Wales/Llyfrgell Genedl. More information
  • ISI Web of Knowledge Service for Education The platform by which users can access Thomson Scientific products subscribed to by an individual institution. More information
  • Zetoc The British Library’s electronic table of contents, providing access to information on the latest research articles and papers, plus an email alerting service. More information

  • JSTOR® A digital archive collection of core scholarly journals. More information

Socio-economic, scientific and spatial resources

  • Census Data The Census Dissemination Unit (CDU) at Mimas is funded by the ESRC and JISC to provide access (using Casweb) to the Standard Area Statistics and related geographical datasets from the 1971, 1981, 1991 and the 2001 Censuses. More information
  • ESDS International As a specialist data service of the Economic and Social Data Service (ESDS), ESDS International led by Mimas in partnership with the UK Data Archive provides UK academics with free access to and support for regularly updated, key international datasets. More information
  • CrossFire The chemical information system containing the CrossFire Beilstein Database for organic chemistry and the CrossFire Gmelin Database - for inorganic and organometallic chemistry. More information
  • Satellite Image Data Service Web-based access to satellite imagery and mosaics of Landsat 4, 5 & 7 (Thematic Mapper imagery), SPOT (for land use mapping and digital terrain modelling), ERS 1 & 2 and ENVISAT (radar data which can be applied to assess land cover, subsidence and geomorhphology. A high resolution Digital Elevation Model for the whole of the British Isles is available and georeferenced SRTM data. Learning materials include the new Image Processing for Remote Sensing Course.   • Intute A free online service providing access to the very best web resources for education and research. More information

Learning and Teaching

Mimas hosts several services that provide access to learning materials for students and staff. These resources also provide teachers with high quality resources that they can incorporate into their teaching.

Jorum A service in development, Jorum is run jointly with EDINA. A free on-line repository service for teaching and support staff helping to build a community for the sharing reuse and re-purposing of learning and teaching materials.

Hairdressing Training A web-based collection of study guides covering much of the hairdressing NVQ curriculum level 2.

Service in development

IESR The JISC Information Environment Service Registry (IESR) is a machine-readable registry of electronic resources. The aim of the IESR is to make it easier for other applications to discover and use materials which will help their users’ learning, teaching and research. More information.

Support for users

The Mimas website provides information about training, news and events, overviews of the services, and links to the websites of each individual Mimas service.

Free introductory training courses on Mimas services are regularly held in Manchester and London. All staff and students are welcome to register for these.

Many services offer various guides, leaflets and posters, available from the service websites.
