Overall description

Name of VRE solution/s

IUGO

Description of VRE solution/s

Iugo is a Semantic Web application that allows researchers to easily search and browse information relating to past, current and future conferences and other events. Iugo integrates and cross-links existing web information for research events, down to the level of individual sessions or individual presentations. Iugo means to bind together.

The Iugo project has produced a prototype system as proof of the this concept. The Iugo project has also included a significant component of work to examine the potential legal, ethical and social impact issues of a would-be production version of Iugo.

Primary user group/s

Researchers and users of research. Also: Event hosts, event organisers, event attendees, those interested in event outputs

Functionality

Iugo is a Semantic Web application that allows researchers to easily search and browse information relating to past, current and future conferences and other events. Iugo integrates and cross-links existing web information for research events, down to the level of individual sessions or individual presentations. Iugo means to bind together.

Benefits

Time saving - the normally scattered web information to events (blogs, papers, images, session details etc) are linked via Iugo for single point search/browse. Iugo would likely provide a research resource in its own right. Iugo offers the potential for expert users to make sharable comments about the event resources linked to from the system.

Current level of maturity

Latest version 0.7, final version of the prototype to be released end September 2006

Target level of maturity at end of project

What is the target version of the solution at the end of the project if different from the one above?

Design & technical implemnetation

Technical implementation

Iugo is based upon a customisation of the SWED (http://www.swed.org.uk/swed/index.html) portal software, itself of J2EE design (MVC paradigm). The Model layer constitutes an RDF database (http://jena.sourceforge.net/)

Architecture

Please provide brief information on the architectural design of the VRE solution/s. You can insert a diagram here as well.

Standards compliance

RDF, XML, a community-driven events ontology (expressed in RDF/XML), J2EE (MVC paradigm)

Software availability

The software will be made accessible by the close of project September 2006

Documentation

Please list what documentation is available for the solution (e.g. user guides, methodology guides) and how it can be accessed.

(not available currently, installation documentation will be made available with the final IUGO release, and will include pointers to the user guide documentation for the open source SWED software which we have customised for Iugo)
