This project tested how to develop a retention policy within a complex set of records relating to 'resource management' so that the policy can become the cornerstone of a wider institutional approach to records management. The project provides guidance on:

  1. how to draw up a retention schedule
  2. the issues raised in gaining buy-in from departmental managers and institutions
  3. a range of issues arising from the retention of records which impact on management processes and practices, and
  4. the fit between retention schedules and records management programmes.

Beyond piloting the Study, and assessing its contribution to the University's incipient records management programme, the project explored how a retention schedule and functional activity model can be more fully integrated within a higher education institution - the different ways in which their information might be interrogated, presented and exploited.  Both the model and schedule have the potential to be more dynamic and could be seen as resources as well as management tools.
