JISC funds a range of content and resource discovery services that have been developed to provide colleges and universities with access to quality resources to support their learning, teaching and research activities.  These services are distributed across the UK at a range of host organisations (usually a college or university).  This programme has been developed to ensure that technical developments undertaken by the services are compatible with the Information Environment Technical Architecture

A variety of publishers and aggregators who provide content (but are not directly funded by the JISC) will also participate in the programme through a number of case studies exploring interoperability issues between their content provision and its delivery within the Information Environment.

This programme is an important step in developing an understanding of the barriers to integration of content and service provision and in identifying the developments required to facilitate integration more fully.

Aims and objectives

This programme aims to ensure that content and resource discovery services are best equipped to work together to provide an interoperable information environment for staff and students in colleges and universities across the UK .

Specific objectives are to:

  • Enable JISC service providers to function fully within the developing information environment  by gaining an overview of current technical solutions and future technical requirements
  • Develop an understanding of how commercial publishers and aggregators can work together with JISC to provide an integrated information environment
  • Develop a better understanding of how the supporting technical architecture needs to develop in order to work with different content service providers

Work under this programme will initially be undertaken through a scoping exercise to test out the extent to which JISC funded service providers are currently offering technical solutions interoperable with the Information Environment.  Following this it is likely that work leading to the technical enhancement of their systems and services will take place.

In addition, a strand of collaborative work with the Publishers Association Group (PALS), is looking at how commercial publishers and aggregators can best work within the Information Environment. This work will enable understanding of the associated technical and organisational challenges.
