Development of Personalisation for the Information Environment 1 (DPIE1)
DPIE 1 is an investigation of how the Information Environment (IE) could be enhanced with personalisation features and Web 2.0 systems and technologies to increase the existing usefulness and usability of the IE for its target users.
The scope of the project includes
- The introduction of JISC bibliographic, serial and archival services into users’ existing Web 2.0 and social networking services. This includes a survey of technology for this puporse.
- The introduction of adaptive personalisation, social networking and other services into the IE. This is addressed by a technology and systems survey, a survey of JISC funded bibliographic, serial and archive services (Archives Hub, COPAC, Intute, JORUM, SUNCAT, ZETOC), enhancements to the IE architecture, and a proof of concept prototype. The focus of this work has been on enhancing JISC funded resource discovery services and repositories mentioned above.
- To provide recommendations as to the likely most popular and useful technologies with which to enhance the IE, coupled with architectural recommendations.
The project builds on the JISC Personalisation Studies, Web 2.0 studies and other relevant work
Aims and objectives:
The aim of the project is to help establish the future development for parts of the IE, particularly bibliographic, serial, archival and repository components. In this the work is directed at increasing the existing usefulness and usability of these IE components for their target users; undergraduate and postgraduate students, teaching staff, and researchers. To achieve a potential increase in usefulness and usability the project recommends the transformation of IE resources into social objects, and the provision of support for architectures of participation that leverage group effort for the benefit of individual participants.
Project methodology:
-
The project is producing desk studies, mostly as a result of surveying internet-based material.
-
The project is proposing enhancements to the IE architecture that are are being produced through an architectural design process.
-
Selected enhancements are being prototyped in a rapid iterative design-implement-evaluate cycles.
Anticipated outputs and outcomes:
Desk studies
-
General survey
-
Technologies to introduce services into Web 2.0 environments
-
Web 2.0 technology and services for incorporation into the IE
-
Personalization approaches (particularly recommender and semantic personalization technologies)
Prototype Library 2.0 system built on top of Copac with various mashups including Amazon (book data and reviews), Google books (search book text), del.icio.us (social bookmarking), and the Manchester Personal Learning Environment (as an exemplar learning/research support as a target for the export of selected resources).
Technology / Standards used:
Prototype technologies: Apache, PHP, mySQL.
Prototype use of standards: SRU/CQL, HTTP, CSS, OpenID, APML.
