Repositories enhancement project
This project is a partnership between the Royal Meteorological Society and the National Centre for Atmospheric Science. The main aim is to develop the mechanisms which could support both a new Journal of Meteorological Data and an Open-Access Repository for documents related to the meteorological sciences.
Aims and Objectives
The project has three fundamental aims:
- Creation of overlay journal mechanics
- Creation of an open access subject based repository for Meteorology and atmospheric sciences
- Construction and evaluate business concept models for potential overlay journals
The BADC will be providing the subject based document repository and the overlay software. The Royal Meteorological Society will provide requirements for the overlay journal and construct the business concept for the data journal and kite mark journal. NCAS (Leeds) will provide give feedback on how this will work from an editor’s point of view and help write the reviewers guidelines.
Anticipated Outputs and Outcomes
- An operational metrological document repository
- Overlay journal software
- A business concept description for the 'Journal of Meteorological Data' and the 'RMetS kite-marking journal'
- Recommendations for setting up subject based repositories and overlay journal infrastructure
OJIMS will generate community debate on what materials need archiving and which should be regarded as 'publication quality'. The Meteorological repository will provide a permanent store for many types of items; journal articles, formal data descriptions, format documentation, technical reports and images.
It is hoped that the business models based on the concept description of the overlay journals will lead to the publication of these journals.
Technology / Standards used
Any repository used will at a minimum have to offer an OAI-PMH interface.
The three partners that will implement the project are:
- University of Leeds, who will development a dataset review policy with RMetS on behalf of the NCAS universities. Leeds as the NCAS lead university will also mandate deposit of NCAS papers (or surrogates) into the repository.
- British Atmospheric Data Centre , who will setup and maintain the document repository
- Royal Meteorological Society who will examine sustainable delivery models
