The aim of this project is to investigate and test a prototype service model to support the development of institutional repositories. We will explore how far the concept of a repository can be embedded within institutional infrastructures and we hope to show that researchers are more willing to deposit their research output into a repository placed firmly within the research, publication and dissemination process. To achieve this, we will evaluate new ways to support research workflows and to enhance the presentation features of research outputs, attracting a wider audience to the service.

Repositories Enhancement project

Institutional repositories are still relatively new and almost all are struggling to achieve a critical mass of content. Institutions have met with the twin challenges of lack of author awareness and indifference to repositories.  The solution proposed by the Emed project is to develop a fully-managed service, where the focus is on the process undertaken to produce papers for publication and/or presentation. We will also investigate further integration of repositories within administrative processes, such as finance, human resources and marketing systems.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of the project is to increase understanding of how repositories can be used to support research and learning, integrating them fully into academic processes.

Project objectives are to:

  • Produce a prototype service model which supports research workflows and enhances the presentation of research outputs
  • Assess technical capabilities for such a service
  • Assess skills requirements and to demonstrate how the service may impact on existing job roles
  • Investigate the integration of the service within university administrative systems
  • Identify which services might be scaled up on behalf of the entire HE community

Project Methodology

The project comprises:

  • Study, to be undertaken by Key Perspectives Ltd. of current practice and  to identify what authors need from a new and enhanced service
  • Design of a web portal by Cranfield and RGU through which authors will interact with the service
  • Development and launch of value-added features within the repository
  • Development and testing of services to assist researchers in preparing for publication
  • Development of post-publication services, such as regular usage statistics
  • Evaluation of the prototype service, to be undertaken by Key Perspectives and Cranfield
