The aims of the workshop were to share understanding across projects, to identify common issues, and to begin to build a programme which offers more than the sum of the constituent projects. The workshop also aimed to develop a set of scenarios that could be used as the basis of an ITT to demonstrate the utility of the services

Programme meeting

Date 26 June 2007

The Shared Infrastructure Services projects are developing (or in some cases scoping) a set of services which support the implementation of the Information Environment architecture, and in particular to support resource discovery and use.

Many of the Shared Infrastructure Services (SIS) projects have been in development for some time; it is important that programme as a whole now addresses usage and takeup within institutions.  A key outcome of this workshop was the creation of a number of scenarios which could form the basis of an ITT which will be open to institutions that are not involved in providing any of the services, to help inform where services might be useful within institutions.

The workshop used scenario planning techniques to create a small number of exemplar scenarios which:

  • offer meaningful benefits to end users
  • can be implemented using SIS and APIs, as they exist now
  • can be of being implemented in universities with some support from the service providers

The key was realism, both in terms of what can be built and in offering real benefits to users.

There is further scenario planning work taking place as a follow-on from this workshop.
