Following recommendations from the project manager, JISC has agreed to establish a National Plagiarism Advisory Service. This service will provide several elements, including
- Generic advice for institutions and staff (examples of possible material)
- An area designed for students providing user-friendly guidance and advice on writing essays and two educational tools may also be provided, one for students to test their understanding of plagiarism and a generic training tool
- Directory of information on the subject: this may include links to useful documentation, web sites, conferences and national press articles
- Workshops: these will include presentations on the issues already highlighted and cases studies from institutions in the UK and abroad. These workshops will also provide a good forum for staff to discuss the issues and share good practice
- Plagiarism detection Facility
This service will be provided by Northumbria University
Detection Service
Although detection software should only be used alongside a wider approach to plagiarism prevention, the general feedback from the community has been in favour of JISC providing some form of central detection service. JISC have procured a national detection facility, which will be fully supported in the first 2 years and available to the UK FE and HE community. After this time, it is expected that access to this service will be on subscription. Any site wishing to use this service will be required to register and enter into an agreement with JISC on its use. After competitive tender the contract to supplier this service has been won by iParadigms. This service will be placed on the JANET network and access by institutions will be via standard web browsers.
