The continuing goal of the PALS Metadata and Interoperability initiative is to facilitate collaboration between the HE/FE and publishing communities and develop practical solutions for allowing the sharing and intgeration of digital content and metadata.

PALS Metadata and Interoperability programme (phase 3)

PALS 3 follows on from two earlier successful programmes - PALS 1 (2005-6) and PALS 2 (2006-7)

Objectives

  • Develop guides for publishers and libraries on key standards, articulating benefits, costs and challenges of employing such standards
  • Explore issues regarding the application of identifiers to digital objects (in particular relating to complex digital objects or digital collections) or to entities such as authors or institutions
  • Investigate issues surrounding the integration of publisher-initiated standards into the JISC IE
  • Develop tools to simplify the effective adoption of metadata and interoperability standards
  • Develop workable mappings which would allow for cross-searching across digital materials on specific themes or subject areas
