DOIs for publishers and the e-learning community
The Stationery Office prepared a report provide practical guidance and
support for publishers, academic institutions, JISC, and its services on
the implementation of Digital Object Identifiers.
Summary
The Stationery Office (TSO) did a
background study on Digital
Object Identifiers (DOIs) during the PALS 1 programme. The aim was
to provide practical support for publishers, academic institutions, JISC,
and its services in the implementation of DOIs.
The project’s report
Digital Object Identifiers for Publishers and the e-Learning
Community (PDF) reviews key concepts like digital
identifiers, persistence, and resolution, and goes into detail on how DOIs
work in practice. The report provides eight use cases showing how
DOIs could be used in the academic community including digital
repositories. Finally it makes some recommendations about how DOIs
should be used in the context of JISC’s Information Environment.
Though the study was done in 2004, it still provides useful background
information on DOIs and may be of considerable interest to institutions
developing repositories.
