Pilot to investigate the creation of an OAI-compliant repository of journal abstracts

An OAI-compliant Metadata Repository for a Specialist Publisher of E-journals

The project is carried out by EEVL, the RDN hub for Engineering, Mathematics and Computing, at Heriot Watt Universityace in partnership with Inderscience Publishers.

Inderscience is a publisher of scholarly international journals and reference books in the fields of science, engineering and technology. The project aims to investigate the creation of an OAI-compliant repository of journal abstracts by making Inderscience's content available for distributed harvesting and searching within the JISC Information Environment.

By piloting the release of a specialist journal publisher’s metadata, the project will act as an encouragement to other publishers to expose their metadata to a wider community by including their metadata in portals and VLEs. Documents and guidelines will be produced to aid other publishers. Issues of cross-searching this metadata will also be explored within a RDN Subject Portal.

The intended deliverables of the project are:

  • A metadata repository of bibliographic information
  • Guidelines, documentation & advice on creation of an OAI repository in publisher friendly language, aimed both at conventional publishers, and organisations who publish data, but who may not have considered sharing it (e.g. institutions and academic departments).
  • Report on the project experience.
  • Content which could be utilised within a subject portal demonstrator
  • Paper which disseminates project results in a relevant publication

The deliverables are now available at http://www.eevl.ac.uk/projects_503.htm
