MRD Programme Progress Workshop

EventVenue Manchester Conference Centre
Date 17-18 May 2010

Aims

The purpose of the workshop was to consider how best to meet the challenge of managing research data in UK Universities. Participants were informed of progress made under the JISCMRD Programme to examine researchers’ data management requirements and improve planning in a number of academic and institutional contexts. The objective was to discuss the detail of the projects’ discoveries and to consider the more general landscape and initiatives required.

Audience

The workshop was attended by nearly 70 participants, representing the funded projects and various stakeholders interested in improving the management of digital research data in UK Universities. This included researchers, libraries, research liaison officers, computing services, funders, managers of research data centres etc.

Discussion – 4 Breakout Groups
  • Supporting researchers' data management needs: What research data management support to researchers want from their institutions?  How may institutions best respond to these needs?  What are the training requirements for researchers and support staff?

  • Structuring research data management in universities: How do we best structure institutional support for researchers and research data management?  What is the role of the library, computing services, research liaison?

  • Institutional responsibilities: What are institutional responsibilities towards research data?  What do institutions need to meet their responsibilities?

  • National coordination: How may we best coordinate the various stakeholders nationally?  How may institutions, research data centres and other stakeholders best coordinate action to improve research data management?

17.30 – 18.00

Panel – Discussion: How may we best ‘ramp up’ research data management in Universities?  What level of national coordination is required and how may we best get stakeholders and experts working together?
