The Wild Thing Project builds on the deliverable from a small (<3k) University of Hull Innovations in Teaching and Learning grant which enabled the development of a ‘proof of concept’ application allowing students to annotate lecture slides in real time using wireless devices. The results of the small project have been disseminated through the SOLSTICE, ICALT 2008 and PBPR 2008 conferences. The existing system works as follows: A lecturer composes their presentation in PowerPoint then using a programmed interface integrates PHP controlled interactive slides into their presentation. Students can then through wireless devices use a web interface to interact with the slides as they are being presented to them. Therefore as a lecturer poses a question, full text responses can begin to appear in on the slide they are presenting. The aim of this project is to further develop the present prototypical system into a professional non-commercial open source system which can then be used cross institutionally.
