Environmental reporting for green outcomes (ERGO)

Overview

The project will demonstrate an innovative way of taking action to reduce the environmental impact of institutional ICT through raising awareness of the effect small behavioural changes can make to reducing energy usage.

Aims and objectives

  • Raise awareness of the effect small behaviour changes can make to reducing energy usage
  • Positive change in behaviour regarding the use of ICT
  • Demonstrate effect methods for reducing ICT energy usage

Project Methodology

  • Appoint a Green-ICT coordinator to drive the project
  • Implement power monitors secretly on individual PCs
  • Develop a platform and process to enable learners/staff to make “energy saving pledges”
  • Develop a display of energy usage from the selected computers, rooms
  • Variations of the display will also be broadcast via email, SMS and RSS feeds
  • Set energy saving targets and encourage staff and students to reach them
  • The platform will quantify the energy savings and indicate how much these contribute to the agreed targets
  • The Green-ICT coordinator will lobby and canvas staff and students

Anticpated outputs and outcomes

  • Develop the role an modus operandi of an institutional Green ICT Coordinator
  • Develop a system for broadcasting the display of ICT energy usage across an Institution
  • Develop a system to collate and enable staff to make energy saving pledges
