Flexible Services for the Support of Research (FleSSR)

Overview

Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud solution for the on-demand provision of computational and data resources in support of research. The two services for research are a software development and testing management framework and block storage service. The user authentication, authorisation and accounting will all adhere to UK NGS standards.

Aims and objectives

The project will install private cloud facilitates within the two HEI partners with an attached management system provided by EoverI. The Public cloud system to allow scaling etc will be installed at Eduserv. With STFC integrating application specific AAA into the overall NGS standards the resource will show bets practice to incorporation of cloud into HEI research operations as well as two distinct pilot services.

Project methodology

The project and main cloud development is led by Oxford working with the cloud software providers. Once best practice has been established then these installations will be replicated in Reading and Eduserv. Development of AAA bridging technologies will be done by STFC into the accepted NGS profiles. The on-demand block storage service will be developed by Reading and the public cloud infrastructure by Eduserv.

Anticipated outputs and outcomes

  • Operation of a private cloud best practice report
  • Installed public cloud system at Eduserv
  • Deployment exemplars for on-demand block storage service and software development and testing framework
  • Integration of IaaS cloud systems through UK NGS technologies for authentication and authorisation
  • Deployment exemplar for standards based cloud management solution integrating EoverI eZEEL system with Eucalyptus.
