To progress and extend the identity centric interoperability project that has evolved to join key business systems in a way that enhances business process for the institution as a whole. The further phase of this pre-existing business objective is designed to incorporate a minimum of three newer applications and tie them in to the Identity Managed relationship that already exists.

Identity management – Phase 3 development at Blackpool & The Fylde College

To progress and extend the identity centric interoperability project that has evolved to join key business systems in a way that enhances business process for the institution as a whole. The further phase of this pre-existing business objective is designed to incorporate a minimum of three newer applications and tie them in to the Identity Managed relationship that already exists.

Aims and objectives

  • consolidate and fine tune the existing previous phases of Identity Management
  • join a recently acquired library management system providing an authoritative user-base and remove a significant duplication of effort
  • homogenise directory account access for Apple users providing a single synchronised directory to all workstation staff and student users
  • provide an interface to Google cloud based services to allow the automatic provision of student email and Google Apps that is identity managed based on the organisations student record system

Project methodology

The project is led by Simon Bailey (Network Manager) drawing on established resource within the institution. Lead development engineers Ken Eccles and John Nicholson will collectively assess suitability of several technical options and form a workable plan with a very high certainty of deliverable outcomes at project completion. The work required will draw on multiple skill sets and will occasionally draw on other personnel throughout the organization.

Anticipated outputs and outcomes

  • The automatic population of a user-base that is supplied and maintained to the current Library Management System.
  • The removal of an inefficient batch process that currently provides user identities for staff and students who need to access Apple Mac based resources at multiple sites.
  • The authoritative control of student identities provisioned from our student record system to provide a reliable synchronised identity to the Google cloud allowing the use of this flexible and cost effective service for all student users.
