Activity week

The conference Activity Week ran from the 13th November 2012 and provided delegates a chance to familiarise themselves with the conference environment, to join in collaborative activities and engage with JISC projects.

Sometimes technology changes the way we can work, and the way we can learn. This session aims to record some of these landmarks by creating a collaborative teaching technology timeline.

Nigel Ecclesfield (JISC Advance), Greg Walker (Colleges Wales), Carole Drury and Dan Hodge (Kendal College) Tuesday 13th November 2012 12:00 - 13:00 Enhancing learning and Teaching in FE BIS have funded JISC Advance to manage 32 projects throughout 2012-13 focussing on four key areas:Innovative uses of technology, Improving the learner experience, Improving efficiencies and Making better use of existing resources.This session looks at the progress two of the projects have made, and how to get involved in using the outputs.

Tony Toole (POTSPAN project manager) PRE-RECORDED Making your mark- Digital Signatures The JISC SWANI Project successfully created a digitised document management system for the administration of Work Based Learning in South West Wales which included a digital signature system that satisfied the audit requirements of the EU and the Welsh Government who jointly fund the WBL programme. This session looks at how SWANI and the follow-on POTSPAN project are progressing in piloting the digitised system with the Skills Academy Wales WBL consortium partners.

Lesley Gourlay (IOE) and Martin Oliver (IOE) Wednesday 14th November 10:00 - 11:00 Projects, policy and digital literacies: from student experience to organisational change. This session will use case studies from the JISC funded Digital Literacies project, showing how student experiences have been documented, fed into policy review, and led to changes in institutional practice and services. The presenters will outline the methodologies used, and introduce a model of organisational change that draws on Actor-Network Theory.Participants will be asked to map routes from project data through policymakers to institutional systems, and think about the work that needs tobe done at each stage to enable this to happen.

Simon Booth (University of Stirling) and Stephen Vickers (IMS) Wednesday 14th November 12:30 - 13:30 Enabling teachers to enhance the learner experience A ceLTIc project webinar. The ceLTIc project shows how to enable LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) connectors to build a flexible infrastructure.This session will discuss how the JISC-funded ceLTIc:sharing project is evaluating the use of LTI to provide a shared service for institutions interested in evaluating WebPA. It will include a demonstration of linking to the tool from Blackboard Learn 9 and Moodle, as well as how the outcomes service along with the unofficial memberships and setting extensions are being used to enhance this integration in a VLE-independent way.

Julie Vuolo (University of Hertfordshire) and Janet Webber (University of Hertfordshire) Wednesday 14th November 2012 15:00 - 16:00 Webinar on rolling out institutional technologies The University of Hertfordshire ITEAM project reflect on the steps required to successfully roll out institutional technologies, their work has looked at voting technologies, but there are commonalities across a number of technologies.

Joanna Wild Thursday 15th November 2012 14:00 - 15:00 The OER engagement ladder The OER engagement ladderUsing ladder metaphor as a way to model progression stages in people’s engagement with OER reuse, this talk will address the following questions:
  • How does engagement with OER manifest itself in people’s behaviour and attitudes in different stages of progression?
  • What makes people disengage from using OER?
  • What are the enabling factors that reinforce engagement?


Students from Oxford Brookes PRE-RECORDED The InStePP project The InStePP project involves student volunteers working in partnerships with staff and other students to develop digital literacies across Oxford Brookes University. Known as ePioneers, these students offer their support to staff developing digital learning resources and activities and can be commissioned to help staff develop a variety of digital resources. This short screencast introduces you to the purpose of the project, as well as exploring how ePioneering is already proving to be successful for both staff and students.

Ruth Drysdale (JISC) Friday 16th November 2012 10:00 - 11:00 Desperately seeking students #coursedata project webinar. How do learners find the courses they need? A look at the outcomes from the JISC coursedata programme. Covering FE, undergrad, postgrad online and CPD.

Richard Pountney Friday 16th November 2012 12:00 - 13:00 Digital Bloom 'Digital bloom' is an abstract collection of digital stories which capture/reveal individual meanings of digital literacy. Users can see other people's stories and they can also add to them. During the demonstration, the participants could explore the installation, learn more about the project and would be able to add their own stories and understandings of digital literacy and create their own 'meadow'.

Alice Lau Friday 16th November 2012 15:00 - 16:00 The assessment diaries A presentation on the use of online Assessment Diaries at Glamorgan. The presentation will enable the viewer to understand the logistical process of gathering assessment deadlines and feedback dates and how these are brought together for a student and staff overview of the Assessment Diaries. Participants will be invited to discuss the feasibility of transferring this approach into their institution.
