COVARM: Course Validation Reference Model

The COVARM project sets out to contribute a computer-based description comprising services, specifications and a proof of concept prototype for developing one of the components of the JISC eLearning Framework programme. Our description has a specific focus on the course validation processes required to support eLearning based foundation degrees. Course validation is a resource intensive activity and can require considerable inter and intra institution collaboration. The dissemination of the results of this project and adoption of the candidate reference model may be a significant contribution to reducing the resources required to support course validation.

Aims and Objectives

The proposal aims to define a candidate reference model utilizing a framework of services to support a canonical business process to support course validation.

Objectives

To meet this aim, the following key objectives have been identified.

  • Evaluate course validation processes of several institutions to define a canonical business process and a set of use cases defining the requirements of the business process.
  • Develop a candidate information model representing the concepts and data required to support course validation;
  • Specify and develop a set of candidate web services to support the canonical business process using any existing ones from the ELF as appropriate;
  • Implement a proof of concept prototype utilizing the services defined for the “Course Validation” area;
  • Review the information models for completeness and develop draft XML compliant specifications;
  • Present the reference model to the Enterprise SIG for external review and completeness check;
  • Ensure dissemination of ongoing activities and outcomes.
