Background / Context

The ReCITE project will re-purpose and reuse an ICT module created for the Wales e-Training Network (WETN), as part of an on-line Foundation Degree in e-Commerce.

Designed at 10 HE Credit level and developed and validated by the University of Glamorgan, an institution external to the project, the ICT module will be re-contextualised as a component of courses at NVQ level 4 in Swansea Metropolitan University, Swansea College and Coleg Sir Gâr in the areas of Business, Management and Computing.

The project will make use of the Phoebe learning design tool developed within the Design for Learning Programme, to help the team identify where there is need for material redevelopment and to make decisions regarding pedagogic changes in the process of reworking materials. Part of this process will be the evaluation of multimedia learning objects developed through the JISC Exchange for Learning REALM and Design for Learning ALeD projects, amongst others managed by the partner institutions, and their suitability for reuse in the new modules.

Aims and objectives

The broad aim of the ReCITE project is to reuse materials created by the Wales e-Training Network (WeTN) in three different curriculum areas and by three different institutions.

The ReCITE project objectives will be to:

  • Repurpose and reuse a 10 credit ICT module, developed at the University of Glamorgan as part of an on-line Foundation Degree, in programmes delivered by Swansea Metropolitan University, Swansea College and Coleg Sir Gâr
  • Quality assure the repurposed modules through the formal processes used by each of the new institutions
  • Use institutional content, where appropriate, to augment the external content from the University of Glamorgan. This content will be limited to 30% of the total module content
  • Create new content, where appropriate, to complete the re-contextualisation in the new programme area. This will particularly involve the learning activities relating to formative and summative assessment and will be limited to 15% of the total module content
  • Create and maintain a project Wiki where all project documents will be made available and project progress reported
  • Pilot the repurposed modules with learners at each of the three institutions and complete a formal evaluation of the outcomes
  • Participate within the JISC community of practice; contributing to programme-level activities, building on the work of existing JISC programmes and services, and participating in peer review activities

Project methodology

The ReCITE project will be led by Swansea Metropolitan University in partnership with Swansea College and Coleg Sir Gar. Swansea College will be responsible for hosting the project re-purposing team who will work with tutors from the partner institutions to create versions of the Glamorgan module for use in the different curriculum areas within their institutions.

The new modules will be trialed with small groups of learners to gather initial feedback on effectiveness of the materials and also the delivery environments.

A pilot delivery period will then be carried out with larger groups and a full evaluation of their experience, and the experience of the tutors, will be carried out.

All outcomes will be published in a final report and will be available on the project website.

Anticipated outputs and outcomes

The outputs of the ReCITE project will be three re-purposed IT modules and a report that details the evaluation of the piloting of those modules. There will also be a public dissemination event and the outputs will also be available on the project web site.

The outcomes of the project will include a contribution to the practical information about effective re-purposing of online content. It will also be able to report on the use of the Phoebe learning design tool and on issues to do with validation of re-purposed content.
