The project will apply a number of methodologies for process improvement, including TOGAF, Lean Thinking, and Soft Systems Methodology, document their impact on defining a Service Oriented Architecture and provide a report and other information on the Enterprise Architecture initiative at Cardiff University. The project will use tools and governance provided by Cardiff’s MWE Programme and will examine the cultural issues relating to its implementation in a Higher Education environment.

Cardiff University: Lean Enterprise Architecture

The project will apply a number of methodologies for process improvement, document their impact on defining a Service Oriented Architecture and provide a report and other information on the Enterprise Architecture initiative at Cardiff University. The project will
use tools and governance provided by Cardiff’s MWE Programme and will examine the cultural issues relating to its implementation in a Higher Education environment.

The core objectives of the project are:

  • To identify a set of existing core University business processes requiring improvement
  • To apply Systems Thinking / SSM, TOGAF and LEAN methodologies to developing/improving a selected existing process.
Application of SSM will provide the Business->Information link and feed into TOGAF. LEAN methods may be able to
    optimise the resultant processes
  • To Document the Business->Information->Application->Technology decision process
  • To Implement the process using appropriate methods and tools
  • To collect metrics and model an existing process
  • To design process improvements and include metrics for measuring performance
