Using peer eGuides to promoting digital literacy (PEDL)
Overview
The project aims to promote digital literacy amongst students within the FE sector (including students studying HE in FE), through the use of peer eGuides. Implemented through training/support of students to become eGuides and by providing support to tutors and students on digital literacy issues.
Aims and objectives
To improve the Digital Literacy skills of learners and staff to create a digitally literate, skilled and confident workforce and student body by:
- Developing a concise skills audit to measure levels of Digital Literacy (February 2011)
- Identifying and training 20 e-guides as part of the initial cohort (March 2011)
- Extending the e-guide project to all full time FE course and all HE courses (September 2011)
- Developing a programme of core Digital Literacy sessions for staff and learners (March 2011)
- Developing a programme of advanced sessions on Digital Literacy (May 2011)
- Developing Digital Literacy learning materials (ongoing)
Project methodology
To support the e-guides the following developments will be undertaken:

Create and pilot a skills audit to evaluate prior knowledge and identify further training needs

Develop a core training programme for e-guides covering information skills,
ICT skills, Learning Technology, e-safety and Web 2.0

Identify opportunities for e-guides to obtain mentoring qualifications

Develop online Digital Literacy support material on Moodle

Develop and deliver advanced sessions on Digital Literacy skills (along with support materials)

Train/work with staff to promote the use of Digital Literacy skills in learning activities and assessment (ie embed within the curriculum).
Anticipated outputs and outcomes
- Digital Literacy skills audit (February 2011)

E-guide training programme (March 2011) – what will this look like – will the project create supporting materials in terms of facilitators notes/guidance for others using these materials?
- Core Digital Literacy training sessions (March 2011)
- Further (advanced) Digital Literacy sessions (May 2011)
