Overview

The Community Education GCSE provision in the Greater Gwent area suffers from retention issues with learners, although those who complete the course are successful.
The project proposes to investigate the use of mobile messaging to enhance learner support and teaching & learning strategies in this area, as well as identifying and overcoming possible barriers in using this technology in Community Education Settings.

Aims and objectives 

Improve the retention rate of learners in the subjects where there is project intervention

Demonstrate specifically how mobile messaging can aid the learning & support of learners

Demonstrate how educators can use mobile messaging to enhance teaching and learning strategies to support learners

Identify and overcome barriers to implementation of mobile technologies in learning & teaching, where the learner is relied upon to provide their own equipment.

Produce a bank of high quality reports, resources and case studies that can inform the college and external parties regarding the successful implementation of mobile messaging in an educational context.

Project methodology

Project Manager will set up the steering and implementation groups assisted by the co-lead.  

Background research will be carried out by project team and lead the staff development needs of tutors

 Project implementation team will carry out pilot and second stage of mobile messaging. 

Steering group will monitor and evaluate effect on retention and carry out reporting. Desk research will be used to analysis and compare current retention figures with historical data.

Anticipated outputs and outcomes

Report into the tools and services available to educators for the implementation of Mobile Messaging in teaching & learning 

Tutor and learner feedback. Encouraged through use of SMS for feedback, twitter, & blogging. 

Official Project Blog, RSS and Twitter feed inc. Informal Blogging, Twitter feed etc of project team members.
